Block an app

How to block WhatsApp at night without missing an emergency

Blocking a messaging app is a bigger decision than blocking a feed. Here is the careful way to quieten WhatsApp at bedtime without cutting off the people who matter.

Quick answer

To block WhatsApp at night on iPhone, add a Screen Time schedule covering your bedtime hours and leave WhatsApp out of the allowed categories. Before you do, set up Sleep Focus, Always Allowed contacts and Emergency Bypass so calls that genuinely matter still reach you overnight.

Most app blocking advice treats every app the same. WhatsApp is not the same. It is where your family, your neighbours and sometimes your employer live, so the decision to block WhatsApp at night deserves more care than blocking a feed does.

Be honest about what you are solving. If the problem is that you lie in bed reading six group chats you do not need to answer until morning, a full block may be overkill. If the problem is that you are still typing at 1am, a block might be exactly right. Either way, set the safety net first.

Set the safety net before you block anything

Apple gives you three separate layers here, and they work together.

  1. Always Allowed. In iOS 27, go to Settings, tap Screen Time, then tap Always Allowed. You can Add People or Add Apps, and Apple says these work at all times regardless of any Screen Time schedules or time allowances you have set. Apple's own example is adding family members or the Health app for emergencies.1
  2. Focus exceptions. Go to Settings, tap Focus, then tap Sleep. Under People, tap Allow Notifications From and choose your contacts. Apple says you can also allow calls from certain groups of people and allow repeated calls, which it defines as two or more calls from the same person within 3 minutes.2
  3. Emergency Bypass. Open Contacts, select a contact, tap Edit, tap Ringtone or Text Tone, then turn on Emergency Bypass. Apple says this lets sounds and vibrations from emergency contacts come through even when your iPhone or notifications are silenced.2
Worth knowing: Apple states that regardless of your Focus settings, you can allow calls from your emergency contacts to come through.2 So a quiet phone does not have to be an unreachable phone.

Try quiet before you try blocked

For a lot of people, muting is enough. WhatsApp documents how to mute individual or group chat calls and messages for a set period: open the chat, tap the name of the group or person, tap Notifications, tap Mute notifications, then choose how long.3

Here is the design detail that makes WhatsApp harder to leave alone than a feed. WhatsApp says that when you mute a chat you will still receive messages, your device just will not vibrate or make noise. It also says you will still have the unread message count next to the chat, and that if you have read receipts enabled, contacts will still receive read receipts when you read their messages.3

So muting removes the sound and leaves the pile. The badge keeps counting, and the moment you look, the other person can see that you looked. That is the bit that pulls you back in at midnight, and it is why some people need an actual block rather than a mute.

WhatsApp also documents using your iPhone's Focus modes, naming Do Not Disturb and Sleep, to silence WhatsApp notifications during specific times or activities, and notes that your device settings override WhatsApp's own settings.4

How to block WhatsApp at night with Screen Time

If quiet is not enough, here are the real steps. In iOS 27, Apple describes Schedules as setting when during the day you can use your apps, and Time Allowances as setting how long.1

  1. Go to the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Screen Time, tap Screen Time Schedule, then turn on Schedule.1
  3. Tap Add Schedule, then tap the days of the week you want to cover.1
  4. Tap the Time Window, name it Night, and set start and stop times around your bedtime.1
  5. Choose the Time Allowance categories that stay available, leaving out the category WhatsApp sits in.
  6. Go back to Always Allowed and check Phone and your key contacts are still there.1

Apple notes Screen Time Schedules and Time Allowances need iOS 27 or later across your Apple devices.1

On iOS 26 the names are different

Go to Settings, tap Screen Time, tap App and Website Activity and turn it on, then tap Downtime and tap Scheduled. Choose Every Day or Customize Days and set the times. Daily limits sit under App Limits.5

Apple says that by default, Screen Time limits can be ignored once reached, and that turning on Block at Downtime, which needs a Screen Time passcode, stops restricted apps opening during downtime.5 On that version you can also tap Always Allowed, tap Contacts and choose Specific Contacts so certain people still get through.5 More on that setup in how to use Downtime on iPhone.

Add a wind down that matches

Apple's Health app lets you schedule bedtimes and wake up times, and says a Sleep Focus helps reduce distractions before and during bedtime, for example by filtering out notifications and phone calls.6 You can set a wind down period from 15 minutes to 3 hours before bedtime, and the Sleep Focus starts at the beginning of it.6 Match that to your block and the phone goes quiet and shut at the same moment.

Why a night block beats a daily WhatsApp limit

A daily limit on a messaging app is the worst of both worlds. It runs out mid conversation in the afternoon, then leaves you free at 1am if you happened to be busy all day.

Be realistic about the trade. If you are a carer, on call, or the person a family member phones at 3am, a hard block on your main messaging app may not be right for you. A mute, a Sleep Focus and a firm block on your actual time sinks may do the job better. Our guide to how to stop scrolling in bed covers the rest of the routine.

Where SETL fits

SETL is an iPhone app blocker built bedtime first. You set your bedtime once and the apps you choose are blocked automatically every night, which for most people means the feeds rather than the phone book. It runs on Apple's Screen Time framework, so Apple hands SETL private tokens and SETL never learns which apps you picked. See the SETL Sleep bedtime app blocker page, or compare with Apple's tools on our Apple Screen Time alternative page. SETL is on a waitlist ahead of launch.

Block WhatsApp at night: FAQs

How do I block WhatsApp at night on my iPhone?

Add a Screen Time schedule covering your bedtime and leave WhatsApp's category out of the allowed ones. On iOS 26, use Downtime with Block at Downtime on. Set your Always Allowed contacts first.

Will I still get emergency calls if I block WhatsApp at night?

Phone calls are separate from WhatsApp. Apple says calls from your emergency contacts can come through regardless of Focus settings, and Emergency Bypass on a contact lets their calls ring when your phone is silenced.

How do I mute group chats at night instead of blocking?

Open the group chat, tap the group name, tap Notifications, tap Mute notifications, then pick how long. WhatsApp says you still receive the messages, your device just will not vibrate or make a sound.

Does muting WhatsApp hide the unread badge?

No. WhatsApp says you will still have the unread message count next to the chat, and that contacts still receive read receipts when you read their messages if you have read receipts turned on.

Should I block WhatsApp or just silence notifications?

Start with silencing. Use Sleep Focus with allowed contacts, and mute the chats you do not need overnight. Move to a full block only if you keep opening the app anyway.

Is it safe to block a messaging app overnight?

It depends on your life. If someone may genuinely need you at night, keep calls and key contacts allowed, and block the feeds instead. A block you cannot trust is worse than none.

Your phone can go to sleep first.
